Curated Conversational A.I. Chatbot vs. Generative Assistants – What’s the Real Difference?

There are some similarities between curated conversational A.I. chatbots and generative A.I. virtual assistants –– like instant response time, natural language processing and intuitive interfaces.  But there are also plenty of key differences to be aware of before you use A.I. to support your brand.

The key difference between the two is that, while curated conversational A.I. chatbots are trained specifically to serve your brand, generative A.I. assistants aren’t loyal to (or informed about) your specific company. Think about the difference this way: using generative A.I. for your brand is like training a new hire by having them review stacks of company literature on top of every other piece of information that’s available about your brand. 

In short: If your goal is to give your audience better, more accurate information, we wouldn’t recommend using bots trained on anything other than coherent, curated and approved company knowledge.

Don’t get us wrong: generative A.I. is great for the average user when accuracy isn’t critical. In just seconds, ChatGPT can spit out formulas, grocery lists, wedding ideas – and whatever else you ask it for. But generative A.I. has also proven incredibly risky in business situations, like when Air Canada’s virtual assistant incorrectly assured a passenger he could book a ticket and apply for a bereavement discount in early 2024.  When your brand is at stake, it’s just not worth the risk of delivering a bad answer.

You’re left with disappointed guests who question why you would deploy a solution that didn’t address their needs.
